It’s a tale as old as time: the widening chasm between the wealthy and the average. With every news cycle, the story continues to evolve, and today we’re discussing a startling revelation – 66 millionaires in Australia didn’t pay a single cent in taxes last year. Yes, you read that right. Despite a combined income nearing the billion-dollar mark, their tax contribution amounted to a whopping zero.

This isn’t a fairy tale with magic spells or secret potions; it’s a real-world saga where the wizards are accountants, highly skilled and adept at navigating the labyrinth of tax law. These maestros, who on average charged a cool $219,000 (a tax-deductible amount, by the way), managed to artfully sidestep over $400 million in taxes.

The hard numbers paint a stark picture: these tax dodgers pulled in an average income of $14.5 million each last year. To contrast this, the average Aussie, who earned a median income of $51,000, contributed over $11,000 in taxes. It’s an inequity that’s hard to ignore.

According to the Australian Tax Office (ATO), the income tax from individuals like you and me, make up almost half of the country’s total revenue. Companies pitch in with 22%, or $107 billion, while the Goods and Services Tax (GST) contributes a further 15%. The rest trickles in from super funds, excise, and various other sources.
